iLife ‘04

Just picked up iLife ‘04 from the Apple Store at CambridgeSide Galleria.

I have to say that I have been mostly pleased. I was able to create a DVD from DV footage assembled in IMovie and subsequently imported into iDVD. I did have a few problems. One was with audio. iMovie has a great audio extract feature that lets you get the audio track from a movie clip. This worked fine in iMovie, but caused problems in iDVD. One of the clips from which I extracted the audio was nothing but white noise once imported into iDVD. Of course, the problem did not manifest itself until the DVD was burned. I trashed a total of 4 DVDs before I fixed the problem. How did I fix it? Went back and re-imported the problematic clips from my camera and re-did it all. This back and forth was very time consuming as I could not figure out how to re-import the movie into iDVD after I had fixed it. I had to start over in iDVD each time I had a snag with the movie.

That said, the finished product came out beautifully. All in all, I’d say it was definately worth the trouble. I’m not used to buggy software from Apple. These tools need some work.

GarageBand review will have to wait. Check back soon.

I’m having the same white noise problems with iDVD and my new MacMini. which has iLife 5.0. have you heard of any fixes from Mac?

I’m afraid not Greg. I have not made any DVDs since the project I mention above. It’s disconcerting to hear that the problem still exists in iLife ‘05. I’m just about to edit some more video and make some DVD’s. If you find any new information I’d like to hear from you.
