Are We Puppets?

On the way to the airport recently, I listened to my taxi-cab driver talk about how the last 4 years under Bush has been “like being in jail.” He went on to say “I almost lost my house last fall” as if Bush were personally responsible. This type of sentiment is common, and it makes me wonder, in this wonderful country, why people think that our politicians hold all of our marionette strings. Don’t we live in a country where our individual effort is rewarded by success? Or are we the children of our politicians waiting for them to throw us a bone?

This train of thought manifests itself elsewhere too. I’ve had discussions with people very close to me who have said. “Why did Bush give us that measly $300 tax cut? That didn’t help the economy at all.” I’ll post in the future about how we are over-taxed, but think about the implication of this statement. It’s as if there are a bunch of levers in the Whitehouse that the president can push and pull to flame the fires of our economy. No! This economy runs on the hard work and ingenuity of its citizens. Clinton was a spectator of the late 90’s boom. (And so was Gore, despite his claim that he invented the Internet) Just like Bush was a spectator in the greatest loss of jobs our country has seen in the last half century.

America is the greatest country on Earth. Here, we are free to enjoy the fruits of our hard work. People immigrate here so that they can control their own destiny.
