What a Country

If you missed the president’s speech last night, you can catch it here.

One of our national treasures is c-span. For the uninitiated, it is the a by-product of our free, open society: a cable channel that broadcasts our governments machinations for the world to watch. One can see our senate floor, a state department briefing, or a President’s speech. They keep a video archive on their website: c-span.org

When I was younger, I never spent more than half a second on this channel. It was just boring talking heads. Now I realize, putting it into the context of history, and world politics, that it is an amazing thing. The American political experiment that began 228 years ago is alive and well, holding our leaders accountable to us, through open proceedings. Can you imagine Sadaam Hussein having such a thing? Can you imagine Russia having such a thing? We are lucky to live in a country who’s constitution outlines the limits of its rulers and the powers of its citizens… and we can watch it all on TV.

Leave your comment. Or don’t. It’s a free country.
