Greetings From Indiana

Northern Indiana is not the first place one thinks of when they want to get away from it all. However it’s probably a great deal more appealing than many realize. The long drawn out evening dusks are rivaled only by those I’ve experienced in France. I have fond memories of wrapping up a few final holes of golf in the waning hours of daylight. And the lake life is so much fun. I’ve spent many warm summer days jet-skiing around the lake and tying up at the sandbar. I’m lucky enough to have family in Indiana, so I try to make it each summer to say hi and relax for a few days. This time was short and sweet, with time spent with my very young cousins Ellie, Maggie and Francie, Zach and Jamie, my high energy Uncles, Tom and Jay, my Scrabble champion cousin, Jason and the reason we’re all here… my Grandfather, Clarence. It was also great to see Emily, Erinn, and Dannene.
Notable on this trip was a great 13 mile run I did on Sunday morning. Tom was nice enough to drive me around in search of a viable 13 mile loop through Amish country. We saw lots of horse drawn carriages and houses without electricity. I’ve been to Indiana many times, and I’m always fascinated by these people who choose to live this way. They don’t have cars, or cell phones, or washing machines. They make their own clothing. I definately respect their individuality… although I don’t understand the choice to forsake all modern conveniences.
Anyway, my run afforded me a nice leisurely tour of Amish-land. One thing I never knew was that the Amish love basketball. I don’t remember seeing a house without a hoop. It was interesting to see a gaggle of black-pants-and-suspender-clad kids shooting hoops. I was also overtaken on my run by a single-horsed carriage manned by a 14 year old boy who gave me friendly wave.
