Olympics Bring Out the Best/Worst

Last night, I just could not go to sleep as I watched the Men’s Individual All-Around Final. I witnessed what most are calling the greatest comeback ever in gymnastics history. Throughout these games, I’ve been looking for a little bit of inspiration from these heretofore little-known athletes as they perform miraculously on the world stage. Last night was a great example of the type of thing I sought. It was incredible to witness the determination in Paul Hamm’s performance after having botched the landing on the vault. He went from 1st place to 12place, and worked his way back to 1st in a dramatic final performance on the high bar that clinched his victory.
Also inspiring was the performance of Otylia Jedrzejczak in the 200 butterfly It is awesome to see someone stuggle for the victory, watch them turn toward the results board, and see them realize that they’ve won. Otylia’s reaction was especially moving.
As fantastic as these Olympic moments are, there are other stories from the games that are equally moving, yet not in a good way. I was disgusted to learn that Kostadinos Kenteris and Ekaterini Thanou of the Greek Olympic team skipped a drug test and faked a motorcycle accident. . Although there is something beautiful about seeing those who cheat and lie getting caught. Both have withdrawn from the gamesand are the shame of their country. If only all those who are so dishonest were so exposed.
I guess something as fantastic as the Olympic games brings out the best and the worst in people.

Perhaps these greeks should listen to their ancestors:
