Summer On Newbury

Growing up in Michigan, and having spent the last 3 years in New England, I can appreciate a good summer evening.
Today, the sun was shining and the temperature and humidity were perfect for a spot on the patio at Charley’s. There are few spots better for raising a tall frosty beverage with friends and watching the managerie of boston hipsters and wonks walking by. At times, one can even catch a snippet of an outrageous conversation from the parade strolling past.
It was just this circumstance that caused my party and I to trade glances with the table next to us. We laughed and struck up a conversation.
Turns out, the two guys at the table next door had just arrived, by bicycle, from San Francisco! Of course they had some stories to tell.
- Hassles by University Police at Brown
- Hitch hiking over bridges that did not allow bikes (with truckers named “TwoDogs”)
- Passing Japanese hikers walking to the East Coast
- Camping on the Esplanade in Boston
Of course, I shared what I could remember from my Uncle Jay’s incredible bicycle journey from Boston to San Francisco. I remember Jay’s comment that there were so many interesting and generous people along the way. Jeff & Mike, it seems, had the same observation to relate.
Meeting such interesting people made for a very pleasant outdoor dinner as the sun went down over Newbury street.
Check out Jeff and Mike’s account of their cross country adventures at http://www.thegreatsitting.com. Their trip began June 1, 2004.
