Eye Wall Passing Grand Cayman
Satellite Loop with Precip Decodes
Just got off the phone with my friend David in the Cayman Islands. The storm is really bad… the worst he’s seen in 8 years. He has retreated to a friends place on “the sound” which is the safest place on the island. Apparently, there is no radio or communications available to him, save his cell phone. He has asked me to try to figure out if things are going to get worse or better. Thank God for the internet, but I’m no weather expert. Stay tuned.
UPDATE:
According to weather channel live coverage, Ivan is at the top of the category 4 scale with 155 mph sustained winds. The storm has two concentric “eye walls”, the most destructive part of the storm.
According to David, he has been forced to the top level of the house where he is riding out the storm. The ground floor is flooded and the car is floating in the car port. The house has been jarred so much that fire alarms ring in the background as I speak with him.
Seablogger has some good background info here.
UPDATE: (1:30 EST)
Just spoke with Dave. His Grand Cherokee is now in the foyer of the house where he is. This makes me wonder if there will be any working vehicles once the storm has moved on. Fortunately, low tide arrived around 12 noon. Looking out the window, it still appears his two story house is in the middle of the sea. Hopefully the storm will move on before high tide around 6pm. Trees are down. Power is down. Some of David’s friends took refuge in a 1 story dwelling and he is not able to reach them by phone.
