Dateline: Kenmore Square

Our dykstraNet correspondent on the street, Alexis, has submitted this report via email:

Mounted Police

Wow!
so the sox won and after the game, me and a couple of friends walked
down to Kenmore square and ended up being in the middle of the riots -
I have never seen mayhem like this up close and personal in my entire
life -

I'm so happy I want to destroy things

I just felt like emailing you all - I had to share
I saw people climbing on the stop lights - and then one snap in half
while someone was on it

Kids Set Fires

fire works were also going off and I saw a couple small fires

Riot Police

I was so close to the riot police -

and when we walked back to my place traffic was stopped even right at
my street ~
I haven’t even formulated an opinion of seeing all this so close -
we also went into a store 24 and they closed the front door so no one
else could get in - we all had to go out the back way as the crowd was
trying to break down the front door -
and it’s true - the stealing and everything as far as riots are
concerned - people were running out the door with whatever they could
carry

Bloody Celebration

Also, on the way back I saw a girl crying . . . obviously drunk - but
she was talking about how the riot police had been “rough” - pushing
her out of the way
and It just made me think of what people in the past had to endure
for a cause
the marches
martin luther king
the police dogs and hoses
and how all this damage had no purpose
and how people didn’t even realize that others had it so much worse to
pave the way to allow us
to even be in the position we are now -
But now I’m home, and warm, and glad the sox won ~

A 21 year old Emerson Student died in the melee.

This is an interesting blog entry on the events last night.

I don’t think I need to say how disgusting this is. However it might be useful to consider if this is human nature. Back in 1989 I pesonally witnessed this same behavior on the campus of the University of Michigan after their winning the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament. There were cars overturned and general riotous mayhem which provoked the police to dispurse the crowd with tear gas.

Remember these posts from back in April when Connecticut Women’s basketball won the NCAA Championship?

I’m glad you posted my email gary - had I known I would have wrote it a little less haphazardly but that’s exactly how I felt right after being in the middle of it.
