Pastoral Pedagogy

This is one worth making your Netflix list.

JoJo Cover

This highest grossing French documentary of 2003 immerses you into the world of a modern rural one room schoolhouse in pastoral France. Shot in a style that shows rather than says, you’re a fly on the wall, observing the formation of that special relationship that teachers develop with their students. Stealing the show is 5 year old JoJo (pictured). From his trial-and-error approach to photocopying to his discovering that one can count higher than 100, his antics are fun to watch. At one point, in a moment of boredom he places his pencil in his left notril for safe keeping. Beyond mere cute kids stuff, the documentary shows children struggling with their homework, balancing their school work with chores, and reconciling after a fight.

For an added bonus, watch it with your favorite teacher.
