Cannabis and Canals

I’m on the last leg of the dykstranet European tour here in Amsterdam. I have a new favorite place to stay here called the Banks Mansion. It’s about 100 Euro less than the local Marriott and is 100% more comfortable and friendly. The lobby is very posh with recessed sculptures and a flickering fireplace. It’s right here in the lobby where I’m able to make use of the free internet and make this posting. The hotel overlooks the (clear your throat for this one) Herengracht Canal and is located in the center of town. The rooms are well appointed with flat panel televisions and dvd players. Did I mention there is a free mini-bar? Also, drinks in the lobby are free… which came in handy when I was late in meeting my friend Rasmuss.

Amsterdam is a great place to walk and explore and, for me, is the quintessential European city. There are dozens of canals and hundreds of little bicycle and foot bridges.

A must see in Amsterdam is the actual house where Anne Frank hid from the Germans during WWII. You can see the false wall that hides the narrow staircase which leads to the hidden rooms where Anne and her family lived… never making a peep during daylight hours for fear that the workers in the business downstairs might hear. The most impressive sight is one of the actual diaries in which she wrote. (She actually filled many diaries with her thoughts and observations. There is no single artifact.)

Of course, prostitution is perfectly legal in certain places here and the women advertise themselves in street level windows. The “Red Light District” as it is known is not some shady, back alley part of town, but really the center of where a great deal of the more pedestrian night life occurs. It’s got a really weird vibe though for your average American. All these women behind glass and people walking by looking at them reminded me of some surreal trip to a human zoo.

Marijuana is also legal here in the city and sold in “coffeeshops”. It’s not uncommon to get a little waft of it when walking around town.

My cab is here to take me to Schipol… I’m off for home at last….

    When will the US admit that prohibition CAUSES more crime than it prevents??? Read “Bad Trip” for startling proof of how the war on drugs is destroying our country. :) Wish I could go out to a bar for a toke!
