Apple Juxtapositioning
Yesterday, I had my first taste of Apple-Fanaticism: The Release of the new Mac Operating System (OS), Tiger. It seems the release of a new OS is a very big deal in Apple circles and yesterday was no exception. It was to go on sale at 6pm. My friend Stu, who always keeps me current on the subtlest of Apple rumors, told me he’d be waiting in line around 5pm. I showed up around 5:15 to a line that stretched and zig-zagged all over the place inside the Cambridgeside Galleria. They closed the entire store around 4pm and a hefty security guard minded the roll-away door to allow entry for Apple store employees. One could see a flurry of activity taking place inside as they unfurled the new ‘TIGER’ banners. It was quite a spectacle that drew many questions from passersby.
Of course, who do you find in a mall at 5pm on a Friday night but gaggles of female teenagers checking the latest low-rider jeans at ‘Wet Seal’. And who is in line at the ‘Tiger’ party but MIT Ballroom Dancing Team jacket wearing, Anime comic reading, WiFi internet surfers. Then the two groups collide:
“Oh my god, what is going on here. Is Bill Clinton in there or something?”
“No, Apple is releasing it’s new OS, Tiger.”
“Um. OS? What’s OS?”
“Operating System.”
“Oh. Why is everyone waiting in line?”
“It’s the ‘cool factor’ of having it first. Plus there are cool prizes and give-aways”
Oh yes, my line time was quite entertaining.
